Alan T. Rogers

I have served on boards and executive committees of non-profits and community organizations such as United Way, Birmingham Education Foundation, Exceptional Foundation, and Rotary Club of Birmingham. My parents taught my brothers and me to be involved in our community, and we have followed that principle closely throughout our adult lives.

At Balch, I helped create a program for minority or under-represented students entering law school. It is a two-day intensive symposium that helps them succeed both in law school and as young attorneys. We call it the Susan B. Livingston Boot Camp for Success. The goal is to create more diversity in the legal profession, and to nurture and develop young talent beyond socio-economic distinctions. Over the past six years, law students from across the Southeast have attended our Boot Camp program. Many of those young attorneys are now successfully practicing law across the country.

As litigation becomes increasingly complex, costly, and time consuming, we are going to see a continued reluctance among individuals and companies to get involved in litigation. I foresee a continued emphasis on resolving disputes outside of the courtroom, which requires knowledge of the adversary process. When the decision to continue litigation is made, you better have an experienced trial lawyer.

I like helping clients reach their goals. That is my job. I enjoy helping individuals and companies clear away the hurdles, whether by effective advocacy or preventive problem solving.

After chairing our firm for nine years and working with clients and lawyers on many projects,  I have become more than just a trial lawyer and now offer clients the trial skills plus general counseling. Part of my job is also to train the next generation of attorneys in the art of problem solving and advocacy. Those disciplines take time and dedication to learn. I want to make sure our young lawyers learn and master those skills.
