Balch & Bingham Hosts Replica of Historic Monroe County Courthouse

The Birmingham office of Balch & Bingham is proudly hosting an approximately 6,000-piece LEGO replica of the historic Monroe County Courthouse.  As film aficionados may recall, scenes from the 1962 Academy Award-winning film To Kill a Mockingbird were shot in the historic courthouse in Monroeville, Alabama.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Alabama's own Nelle Harper Lee.  To celebrate this anniversary, the Alabama Humanities Foundation has organized a number of events in Birmingham and Montgomery, "TKAM 50:  To Kill a Mockingbird -- Awakening America's Conscience."

TKAM 50 will include an art exhibit at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute which will run from April 9 through May 15, 2010, followed by a brief exhibit at Montgomery's Stonehenge Gallery and then a final reception at Montgomery's Wynfield Mansion on May 22.  The exhibit will feature some 35 pieces of art created by national and Alabama artists (Nall, Nicolosi, Frank Fleming, and William Christenberry, to name just a few) inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird.  This collection art will include the LEGO courthouse created by Birmingham resident Wesley Higgins.  All of the art will be auctioned off at the May 22 event, with an opportunity to pre-bid at the opening night reception at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on April 9.  Proceeds will benefit the statewide activities and programs of the Alabama Humanities Foundation.

Balch & Bingham is a proud sponsor of both the opening night reception at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the May 22 event in Montgomery.  Law firm partners Joe McCorkle and Jim Noles are serving on the steering committee for TKAM 50.  Noles is also the vice chairman of the Alabama Humanities Foundation's Board of Directors.

The Courthouse will be on display at Balch & Bingham's reception area until April 1, 2010, at which time it will be moved to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.  Balch & Bingham's office is located in the Regions Tower, 1901 Sixth Avenue North, Suite 1500, in downtown Birmingham.  For more information regarding TKAM 50, visit www.ahf.net/mockingbird.
