Balch Supports Alabama Humanities Foundation Annual Awards Luncheon
Today, Balch & Bingham joined with Vulcan Materials Company, Freeport-McMoran, and Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in sponsoring the Alabama Humanities Foundation's (AHF) annual award luncheon.
This year, the AHF honored veteran University of Montevallo professor and former AHF board chairperson Elaine Hughes with the 2011 Alabama Humanities Award. AHF also recognized longtime supporter Wells Fargo with the 2011 Charitable Organization in the Humanities Award. Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarships were also presented to five deserving elementary school teachers from schools across Alabama.
Approximately 400 guests, including former Governor and First Lady Bob and Patsy Riley, attended the luncheon, held this year at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover, Alabama. As in previous years, attendees at the luncheon enjoyed hearing from an outstanding keynote speaker. This year's speaker was General Charles C. Krulak (USMC-Retired), the 13th president of Birmingham-Southern College and a former Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The AHF is the state affiliate of the National Endowment of the Humanities. Its board of directors' leadership includes chairman Jim Noles, a Balch partner in the firm's Environmental and Natural Resources section in Birmingham; vice chairman Judge John Rochester, of Ashland; treasurer Danny Patterson, of Mobile; secretary Lisa Narrell-Mead, of Birmingham; Nancy Sanford, of Florence; Reggie Hamner, of Montgomery; and past board chairman Bob Whetstone, of Birmingham.
