Robert S. Ellerbrock III, counsel in the firm’s Birmingham, Ala., office and leader of the firm’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Practice Group, was quoted by Employee Benefit News regarding employee benefits for same-sex couples. Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in United States v. Windsor, Mr. Ellerbrock provided insight regarding the definition of the term “spouse” in benefit plan documents according to the government. He also spoke on the need for employers to update existing plan policies to remain inclusive of all employees.
