Ashley Eley Cannady, attorney in the firm’s Jackson, Miss., office and member of the Labor & Employment Section, was quoted by Human Resource Executive regarding parental/paternity leave policies on Oct. 22, 2015. Ms. Cannady commented on recent conversations surrounding new fathers’ requests for parental leave, specifically relating to a recent Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) settlement with CNN concerning an employee whose request for additional paid time off for paternity leave after the premature birth of his daughter was denied. Ms. Cannady spoke about the potential increase in lawsuits claiming retaliation after paternal leave. She said that companies must be careful to ensure that employees who take parental leave are not treated differently than employees who do not take advantage of the benefit.
