About Mateo
Q&A
  • What previous experiences, prior to your work at Balch, influence your practice?

While in law school, I clerked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where I handled regulatory matters requiring a working knowledge of administrative law and public policy principles. Prior to that, I worked with former U.S. Senator Richard G. Lugar, researching and preparing briefs on pending federal legislation. While living in Washington, DC, I also worked at a government relations firm where I assisted in the execution of a major grassroots effort resulting in over 300 members of Congress co-signing a policy letter to President Obama.

  • What do you see on the horizon in your area of practice?

Issues related to government ethics continue to shape public policy and contemporary political dialogue. Debates over lobbying disclosure requirements, the “revolving door” prohibitions, and restrictions on gifts to public officials will determine how interest groups and citizens will be able to interact with government in the future. Likewise, issues related to campaign finance will continue to reverberate in the aftermath of watershed U.S. Supreme Court cases like Citizens United v. FEC.

  • What do you find most exciting about your work?
  • What type of matters do you work on most often?
