ROY R. ROBERTSON, JR. is a partner in the Firm's Energy Practice Group in Birmingham where his practice is devoted primarily to natural gas related commercial transactions, regulatory oversight and litigation and federal appeals.  Mr. Robertson has 35 years of experience in these areas and he has focused his legal industry background, along with his training in economics and finance, on achieving his clients' business goals with a minimum of adverse financial and regulatory consequences.

Mr. Robertson's experience includes:

  • Advising and representing interstate pipelines before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and federal Courts of Appeal.
  • Advising and representing natural gas distribution utilities in pipeline certificate, rate and tariff proceedings, including litigation or settlement of contested cases.
  • Assisting natural gas storage companies in complying with state regulatory requirements.
  • Advising major industrial and utility clients on contracting for natural gas and its subsequent transportation and storage arrangements.
  • Participating in due diligence reviews of proposed energy company acquisitions.
  • Advising clients on natural gas arrangements for major new industrial and utility facilities.

Prior to joining Balch & Bingham in 2002, Mr. Robertson served as in-house counsel for Southern Natural Gas Company and, thereafter, as Assistant General Counsel for MidCon Corp, parent company of Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America.  He also was a partner with law firms in Illinois and Indiana, representing clients, including a major gas and electric utility, in federal regulatory and natural gas commercial matters.

For all of his clients Mr. Robertson utilizes his knowledge of the natural gas industry, his experience in natural gas commercial transactions and regulatory proceedings and his commitment to achieving his clients' goals in a manner that is consistent with minimizing financial and regulatory risks.
