Staff Sends Recommendation for Risk-Informing the Reactor Oversight Process for New Reactors

The NRC Staff issued SECY-13-0137, (released January 3, 2014), “Recommendations for Risk-Informing the Reactor Oversight Process for New Reactors,” which responds, in part, to an October 22, 2012 Staff Requirements Memorandum on SECY-12-0081, “Risk-Informed Regulatory Framework for New Reactors.” SECY-13-0137 specifically addresses the Commission’s request to give additional consideration to the use of relative risk metrics or other options that would provide a more risk-informed approach to the determination of the significance of inspection findings for new reactors, and to provide a notation vote paper as directed in the Staff Requirements Memorandum.
