The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on March 11, 2014 issued a report on nuclear safety to the Senate Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure and Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. The report assesses U.S. and international regulatory progress three years after the events at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. The report commends the NRC for improving its emergency response data system (ERDS), and notes that the ERDS’ ability to collect and transmit information would be compromised under certain emergency conditions. The report recommends that the NRC expedite tis decision on whether or how to upgrade the ERDS so that it would remain fully functional during emergency conditions.
