NRC Issues Information Notice Regarding Exothermic Reactions Involving Dried Uranium Oxide Powder

The NRC issued a revision to IN 1999-03 to all operating uranium recovery facilities that produce uranium oxide powder (yellowcake) and all Agreement States with the authority to regulate uranium mills. The IN alerts licensees to recent events involving pressurized drums of dried yellowcake.  The IN is a revision to IN 99-03, which previously discussed industry experience with pressurized 208-liter (55-gallon) metal drums and related exothermic reactions involving yellowcake material.  The NRC expects recipients to review the information for applicability to their licensed activities  and to consider actions, as appropriate, to avoid similar problems. Suggestions contained in this IN are not NRC requirements, and therefore, no specific action or written response is required.
