NRC Issues Rule Incorporating Revised ASME Code Cases into Its Regulations

The NRC has issued a final rule updating its regulations to incorporate revised Code Cases published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).   ASME Code Cases set forth alternatives to the ASME’s Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPV Code) and Code for Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants (OM Code).  NRC regulations incorporate the BPV and OM Codes by reference, making the codes legally binding requirements for licensees.  By incorporating the revised Code Cases by reference, licensees will now be able to reference the ASME Code Cases in applications for construction licenses, operating licenses, combined licenses, standard design certifications, standard design approvals, and manufacturing licenses.  The rule goes into effect on December 5, 2014.
