NRC Publishes Supplemental Final Safety Evaluation Report for ESBWR

The NRC has published a supplemental Final Safety Evaluation Report (FSER) for GE-Hitachi’s (GEH’s) Economic Simplified Boiling-Water Reactor (ESBWR) standard design, as Supplement No. 1 to NUREG-1966.  In 2011, the NRC issued an FSER and published a proposed rule to certify revision 9 of the ESBWR design control document (DCD).  The NRC subsequently identified issues with the steam dryer design methodology in revision 9 and issued requests for additional information (RAIs) to GEH.  GEH incorporated its response to the RAIs in revision 10 to its DCD, which it submitted in April 2014.  The NRC issued an advanced supplemental safety evaluation report and, in May 2014, published a supplemental proposed rule to certify revision 10 of the DCD, which referenced the advanced supplemental safety evaluation report.  The NRC’s Final Rule certifying revision 10, which was published in October 2014, indicated that a supplemental FSER would be published before the final rule became effective.  Today’s Federal Register notice indicates that the NRC has published that supplemental FSER.
