NRC Accepts APR1400 Application for Design Certification

The NRC has docketed Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company’s (KHNP) revised application for design certification of their Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) design. The design is based on the Korean Optimized Power Reactor 1000 and is for a 1,400 MW two-loop pressurized water reactor. KEPCO and KHNP submitted an application for APR1400 design certification in 2013, but the NRC rejected that application as incomplete. KEPCO and KHNP re-submitted a revised application on December 23, 2014. By docketing the revised application, the NRC has determined that the application contains sufficient technical details to enable a full safety review. If certified, the APR1400 design would be available for reference by combined license applicants for a period of fifteen years.

In addition to the APR1400, the NRC is reviewing design certification applications for Areva’s U.S. EPR and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ US-APWR and is reviewing renewal applications for the ABWR design certification from GE-Hitachia and Toshiba.
