NRC Issues Draft Guidance on Quality Classification under General Design Criterion 1

The NRC has issued draft regulatory guide (DG) DG-1314, “Quality Group Classifications and Standards for Water-, Steam-, and Radioactive-Waste-Containment Components of Nuclear Power Plants.”  The draft guidance would update Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.26, which contains guidance for quality standards acceptable for various classes of nuclear plant structures, systems, and components required to satisfy General Design Criterion (GDC) 1, “Quality Standards and Records.”  GDC 1 requires that structures, systems, and components important to safety be designed, fabricated, erected, and tested to quality standards commensurate with the importance of the safety functions to be performed.  Comments are due on the draft guidance by June 15, 2015.
