The NRC is seeking public comment on a draft white paper prepared by the staff in response to the Chairman’s tasking memorandum, “Evaluating Options Proposed for a More Holistic Risk-Informed, Performance-Based Regulatory Approach,” which directed staff to develop recommendations related to the implementation of NUREG-2150, “A Proposed Risk Management Regulatory Framework.” The draft white paper discusses three items that the staff intends to present to the Commission: (1) options for enhancing the risk management approach to nuclear power reactor safety, (2) re-evaluation of improvement activities from the Fukushima Near-Term Task Force Recommendation 1, and (3) a proposed policy statement regarding the risk management approach to safety and security. The staff is making the draft white paper available for public comment prior to presenting its recommendations to the Commission. Comments are due by June 11, 2015.
