NRC Requests Comment on Need for Financial Planning Requirements for Management of Radioactive Byproduct Material

The NRC plans to undertake a scoping study to determine the need for financial planning requirements for decommissioning and end-of-life management of radioactive byproduct material—particularly Category 1 and 2 sealed sources. The NRC is seeking stakeholder input on the need for such requirements, including comments on reports from the Radiation Source Protection and Security Task Force and the Low-Level Waste Forum Disused Sources Working Group, which both recommend that the NRC evaluate the need for financial assurance requirements for licensees to address disposition and disposal costs of sealed source radionuclides.  The reports’ findings are discussed in more detail in the NRC’s Federal Register notice. The notice also poses several specific questions to stakeholders. Comments are due by October 19, 2015.
