NRC Issues Tribal Policy Statement

The NRC has issued a Tribal Policy Statement in an effort to promote effective government-to-government interactions with American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes, and to encourage and facilitate Tribal involvement in Commission activities. The policy statement sets forth the following principles that will guide the Commission’s interactions with Indian Tribes: (1) the Commission recognizes that it will uphold its Trust Responsibility to Indian Tribes by providing protections under its implementing regulations; (2) the Commission recognizes the right of Tribal sovereignty and self-determination; (3) the Commission will conduct outreach to keep Indian Tribes informed of agency actions affecting them; (4) the Commission will engage in timely consultation with Tribal governments on regulatory actions that affect the Tribes; (5) the NRC will coordinate its Tribal consultation with other Federal agencies whenever possible; and (6) the Commission will encourage participation by State-Recognized Tribes.
