NRC Issues Annual Assessments for Nuclear Plants

The NRC has issued annual letters to all of the nation’s 99 commercial nuclear power plants operating in 2017. The annual letters address operational performance of each plant throughout the year. The NRC determined that 83 plants met all safety and security performance objectives, while 13 needed resolution of one or two items of low safety significance. No reactors were in the third performance category with a degraded level of performance, but three reactors were in the fourth performance category. In the spring and summer, the NRC plans to host a public meeting to discuss the annual assessments at each plant placed in the fourth performance category. A separate announcement will be issued for each public assessment meeting.
