NRC Issues Revision to Regulatory Guide on Criteria for Accident Monitoring Instrumentation

The NRC has issued Revision 5 to Regulatory Guide 1.97, “Criteria for Accident Monitoring Instrumentation for Nuclear Power Plants.” This revision describes an approach acceptable to NRC staff for meeting regulatory requirements for instrumentation to monitor accidents in nuclear power plants. Revision 5 endorses, with a few exceptions and clarifications, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Standard 497-2016, “IEEE Standard Criteria for Accident Monitoring Instrumentation for Nuclear Power Generating Stations.” Revision 5 also expressly expands applicability of Regulatory Guide 1.97 to Part 52 design certification or combined license holders or applicants.
