NRC Seeks Comment on Regulatory Basis for Physical Security of Advanced Reactors

The NRC is requesting comment on a regulatory basis to support a rulemaking that would develop specific physical security requirements for advanced reactors. The rulemaking would address light-water small modular reactors and non-light-water reactors. The purpose of this rulemaking would be to provide a clear set of physical security requirements for advanced reactors that will reduce the need for advanced reactor licensees to seek exemptions to current physical security requirements. Because the current physical security requirements were developed for large light-water reactors, the NRC feels some of these regulations do not take into account advanced reactor designs. The NRC intends for this rulemaking to retain the current overall security requirements in 10 C.F.R. 73.55 while providing alternatives for advanced reactors to specific physical security-related regulations. The NRC will consider comments on the regulatory basis as it develops the proposed rule. Comments are due by August 15, 2019.
