Balch & Bingham LLP today announced a transition in firm leadership. M. Stanford (Stan) Blanton, chair of the firm’s Nuclear Energy Practice Group, assumed the role of managing partner and chair of the Executive Committee effective Jan. 1, 2016. Long-term firm leader, Alan T. Rogers, will devote his focus to his litigation practice.
After serving three consecutive three-year terms as chair of Balch's Executive Committee and a total of twelve years as a committee member, Mr. Rogers elected to return to full-time practice. Before becoming chair of the firm’s Executive Committee, Mr. Rogers, a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, served as chair of the Litigation Section for 12 years.
“In a healthy partnership, we avoid tight grips on management positions and believe rotation is best for Balch. I have been honored to serve, but am ready for a rotation and to return to full-time practice,” said Mr. Rogers. “I believe the Executive Committee chose well in its selection of Stan and I supported the decision. It is reassuring to hand the reins to a successor who is a firm leader. I have tremendous confidence in his ability to guide our firm forward.”
Mr. Blanton has led the firm’s Nuclear Energy Practice Group since 1994 and is beginning his 10th year as member of the Executive Committee.
Mr. Blanton received his B.S. in 1980 and his J.D and M.B.A in 1983, all from the University of Alabama. He joined Balch in 1983 as an associate, immediately after graduating from law school. For the last 25 years, Mr. Blanton has focused on the representation of the owners, operators and purchasers of electric generating facilities, with special emphasis on commercial nuclear development, regulation and policy. He is a recognized leader in the field and currently is ranked by Chambers USA, one of the most respected legal ranking directories, in its nationwide rankings. Additionally, the firm’s nuclear energy practice, under Blanton’s leadership, achieved a nationwide Chambers USA ranking.
“We are grateful for Alan’s leadership, strategic vision and invaluable contributions that have helped us become the firm we are today," said Mr. Blanton. "We are excited for Alan as he transitions back into full-time legal practice serving our clients. He will remain actively involved in recruiting and client engagement – both of which he enjoys. During his tenure over the past nine years, Alan has helped create a strong foundation that positions us well for the future,” said Mr. Blanton.
Mr. Blanton has expressed a strong commitment to overseeing the firm’s strategic plan, focusing on Balch’s core strengths and ensuring attorney and staff excellence.
“I’m honored to be chosen by my partners for this new role and, on behalf of the firm, thank Alan for all he has done in his leadership roles," said Mr. Blanton. "I look forward to his support as we move ahead and build on the foundation that Alan, our attorneys and staffs have created over the past 93 years."
