Balch & Bingham Welcomes Veteran Litigator Martha Thompson; Bolsters Medical Malpractice and Employment Litigation Practices

Balch & Bingham LLP is pleased to welcome veteran litigator Martha Thompson as a partner in its Birmingham office and member of the Litigation Practice. Martha brings more than 20 years of experience representing healthcare entities in medical malpractice cases before state and federal courts across Alabama.

“Martha has demonstrated exceptional skills as a courtroom advocate. We are excited to have her on our team. Her addition to Balch reflects our commitment to attracting the best talent to serve our clients,” said Russ Campbell, partner in the firm’s Birmingham office and chair of the Litigation Practice. “Martha’s medical malpractice experience and deep knowledge of the healthcare industry is extremely complementary to our litigation practice and enhances our depth in this area.

Martha regularly represents hospitals, nursing homes, medical labs and insurers in medical malpractice cases alleging serious personal injury or wrongful death. She remains informed on emerging regulations governing health systems and regularly advises clients on cases involving complex medical issues. Martha’s practice also includes the defense of employment issues, including age, race, and sex discrimination.

Martha has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America since 2014, and was included in the organization’s “Top Women in the Law” feature in 2016. She is a member of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, Birmingham Bar Association, Birmingham Bar Foundation (Claims and Litigation Management), DRI, and Mobile Bar Association.

Martha earned a J.D. from The University of Alabama School of Law in 1997 and a B.S. from Vanderbilt University in 1993.

Balch has one of the largest litigation practices in Alabama and includes more than 90 active litigators across six states and Washington D.C. A key strength of the practice is Balch’s work in heavily-regulated industries including energy, financial services and healthcare. Balch attorneys regularly serve as national, and regional counsel, representing clients in federal and state courts across the country, the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Courts of Appeals. Balch’s Litigation Practice is recognized by Chambers USA 2017 as a Band 1 practice in Alabama, and in its 2017 guide Chambers USA noted that clients see Balch “as part of our company DNA.”
