Balch & Bingham Continues Expansion in Texas with Addition of Energy M&A Partner Derek J. Anchondo in Houston

Balch & Bingham continues its expansion in Texas with the addition of experienced energy transactions and M&A attorney Derek J. Anchondo as a partner in the Houston office. Derek brings to the firm more than 20 years of experience advising clients in the oil & gas sector, the midstream sector, in the technology space, in engineering, procurement and construction projects, in the marine and shipping sector, and the aviation sector. Derek routinely advises clients in corporate matters, including mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, financing transactions, secured and unsecured credit transactions, joint ventures, and project development.

“Derek is an outstanding addition to our Corporate Practice. He brings in-house experience working in the international oil & gas and energy sectors that will benefit our clients and greatly support our continued growth in Texas,” said Stan Blanton, managing partner. “His addition reflects the firm’s strategy to continue adding talented lawyers to our corporate team, which works closely with energy companies across the U.S.”

Derek has extensive experience in domestic and international offshore and onshore upstream exploration and production activities, including conventional and unconventional resources, offshore and onshore drilling, the purchase or supply of crude oil or natural gas, joint operating agreements, production sharing agreements, host-country work contracts, the procurement of equipment or services, and engineering, procurement and construction.

In addition to his oil & gas experience, Derek has advised clients in the construction of liquefied natural gas and compressed natural gas facilities, the construction of pipeline facilities, commodities transactions, the shipping of natural gas, and in the preparation, drafting, and negotiation of related agreements. He also has experience in the aviation sector, including mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, aviation finance, aviation leasing, and experience in shipbuilding contracts, vessel repair and modification agreements, supply and towing contracts for maritime vessels, and international shipping, transportation and logistics matters. Most recently, Derek advised a number of start-up business entities on projects in the greater Houston area.

Derek’s announcement follows the addition of energy M&A partners Philip Dunlap and David Bowsher, who joined Balch in January and will also work from the firm’s downtown Houston office, located at 811 Louisiana Street.

“Balch has an outstanding reputation for innovative leadership in the energy industry. I was particularly impressed by the firm’s culture and focus on teamwork and collaboration. I am excited about the tremendous opportunity to join a talented group of lawyers and look forward to continuing the growth of the practice in Texas,” said Derek Anchondo, partner.

Derek received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and is licensed in Texas and New York.
