Balch & Bingham is pleased to announce that James M. (Jim) Robertson joins the firm as of counsel in the Intellectual Property and Trademark Practice in Birmingham. Jim is a registered patent attorney who focuses on intellectual property law with an emphasis on U.S. and international patent rights including acquisition, enforcement and licensing.
Jim has experience in representing large multi-national corporations and universities to prepare and prosecute patent applications involving a range of technologies, including mechanical devices, textiles, chemicals and novel materials. Jim also has an active practice representing clients in AIA proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and experience in developing, maintaining and enforcing domestic and international trademark portfolios.
As a former development engineer, Jim understands the significance of developing and protecting intellectual property rights both for internal use to protect existing markets and for potential licensing. At the same time, Jim also understands the importance of avoiding controversy by designing around pre-existing patents when possible and developing the best possible defenses when a design around option may be impractical.
Jim received a J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law and a B.S. in Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering from the University of Arizona. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice in Alabama and Illinois.
In addition to his work at Balch, Jim maintains his own law practice, J.M. Robertson, LLC.
