Claire Johnson and Shalyn McKitt Join Balch & Bingham’s Birmingham Office; Bolstering Litigation, Healthcare and Environmental & Natural Resources Practices

Balch & Bingham is pleased to announce two new attorneys have joined the firm’s Birmingham office. Claire Johnson joins as a member of the Environmental & Natural Resources Practice and Shalyn McKitt joins as a member of the Litigation Practice, with a focus on healthcare litigation.

Claire counsels large utilities as well as industrial and manufacturing companies, helping them navigate environmental regulatory compliance issues, environmental permitting, and environmental litigation. Claire also assists on corporate and real estate deals by conducting environmental due diligence. Claire has experience with a wide range of environmental statutes, including the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and state counterparts. She works with EPA and state environmental management entities to help clients navigate enforcement actions.

Claire received her J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School where she was the development editor of the Environmental Law and Policy Annual Review, as well as the president of the Energy and Environmental Law Society. An active member of the Birmingham community, Claire is a member of the Freshwater Land Trust Junior Board and Land Committee, the Junior League of Birmingham, and the Heart of Alabama Walk to End Alzheimer’s Planning Committee. 

Shalyn McKitt is an experienced litigator with a diverse background representing clients in health law, employment law, governmental affairs and administrative law, and regulatory matters. Prior to joining Balch, Shalyn served as assistant attorney general for the State of Ohio in the Health and Human Services Section, assistant regional counsel for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - Region VI and senior legal counsel for a healthcare technology company. She gained extensive courtroom experience with complex healthcare issues during her tenure with the government. 

Shalyn received her J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law, where she also received a Certificate in Governmental Affairs. She also is a recipient of the Order of the Samaritan, the highest public service award bestowed by the University of Alabama School of Law and served as editor-in-chief of the Alabama Civil Rights & Civil Liberties Law Review. She also received her M.A., summa cum laude, in Health Studies from the University of Alabama. Shalyn volunteers as a pre-law coordinator and advisor at Stillman College and as a mentor for Bridge Builders Esq., a mentorship program open to aspiring Black lawyers.
