Shalyn McKitt Presents on Securing Resident Data in the New Technology Age at the Annual Meeting of the ALAA

Balch & Bingham’s Shalyn McKitt, attorney in the firm’s Birmingham office and member of the Litigation Practice, spoke at the Assisted Living Association of Alabama’s annual meeting in Point Clear, Alabama on March 23, 2022. Her presentation highlighted the importance of implementing changes in the way you secure resident data and the steps you can take to ensure data privacy.

The presentation addressed how issues like identity theft, staff access to personal technology and requests for records from outside the facility have the potential to negatively impact assisted living communities. Shalyn offered insights into different methods of sorting data, such as two factor authentication or requiring encryptions, and disposing of data, such as retention schedules and Wi-Fi cache issues, that can prevent breaches in security of resident data.

Shalyn McKitt is an experienced litigator with a diverse background representing clients in health law, employment law, governmental affairs and administrative law and regulatory matters. 

Prior to joining Balch, Shalyn served as assistant attorney general for the State of Ohio in the Health and Human Services Section, assistant regional counsel for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - Region VI and senior legal counsel for a healthcare technology company. She gained extensive courtroom experience with complex healthcare issues during her tenure with the government.
