Shalyn McKitt Highlighted in Article Discussing Volunteerism in the Legal Field, Published by the BBA Bulletin
Shalyn McKitt, attorney in the Birmingham office and member of the Litigation Practice was featured in an article entitled “Paying It Forward: Volunteer Lawyers Share Stories of Getting Back as Much as they Give”, published by the BBA Bulletin.
In the article, Shalyn discussed one of her most memorable cases she worked on for Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham, in which she advocated for a client at risk of losing her housing. Shalyn explained that oftentimes, matters of this nature boil down to communication and being a conduit of information for both parties. Shalyn stated “It was really fulfilling to know that even if I wasn’t necessarily practicing law in the traditional way that I’m used to, I was able to help negotiate and explain issues that were really important to someone’s life.”
Shalyn articulated the deep value she finds in volunteering her time and legal services, knowing that the skills she offers are benefiting someone in need.
Shalyn is an experienced litigator with a diverse background representing clients in matters concerning health law, employment law, governmental affairs and administrative law and regulatory matters. As a previous litigator for a state government and the federal government, Shalyn gained extensive courtroom experience with complex healthcare issues and a deep understanding of the intricacies of litigation in federal and state courts. Immediately prior to joining Balch, Shalyn worked in-house as senior legal counsel for a health care technology company.
Shalyn is active in the community, currently serving as Vice Chair of the DRI Young Lawyers Diversity & Inclusion Steering Committee, as well as a member of the Alabama State Bar’s Young Lawyers Executive Committee. Additionally, she was named to the Alabama State Bar leadership class for 2022.
