Balch’s Shalyn McKitt Shared Insights on Ageism and Generations in the Legal Profession at the 2022 DRI Insurance Claims Seminar

Shalyn McKitt, attorney in the firm’s Birmingham office and member of the Litigation Practice, spoke at the 2022 DRI Insurance Claims Seminar in Houston, Texas on March 21, 2022. In her presentation, Shalyn highlighted that as “Generation Z” enters law firms as young associates and summer associates, the new age of the legal profession has begun. Through her presentation, Shalyn intended for attendees to gain understanding of what these new waves mean for their firms and the legal profession at large.

Shalyn brought attention to the impact of COVID-19 on the next wave of young associates.

“2022 is different than most years in the past because law students entering the profession attended school during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said. “Therefore, young associates have grown accustomed to remote work opportunities and flexible work schedules with little-to-no socializing and networking.”

She went on to share that ultimately, firms will need to lean on Millennials to help welcome Generation Z into the profession as they are old enough to be in conversations with firm managers about updating and modernizing their recruitment techniques. Millennials are also young enough to relate to the COVID-19 crippled Generation Z.

Shalyn is an experienced litigator with a diverse background representing clients in matters concerning health law, employment law, governmental affairs and administrative law and regulatory matters. As a previous litigator for a state government and the federal government, Shalyn gained extensive courtroom experience with complex healthcare issues and a deep understanding of the intricacies of litigation in federal and state courts. Immediately prior to joining Balch, Shalyn worked in-house as senior legal counsel for a health care technology company.
