About D. Paul
Q&A
  • How are you involved in your community?

I have always prioritized community engagement, and I have been an especially active supporter of education – particularly the University of Alabama, where I have served as a member of the President's Council at both the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa campuses. I’m also a member of the Board of Visitors of the School of Commerce and Business Administration. Two endowed chairs, established jointly by my late wife and myself, together with resources from Compass, have been funded at each of the School of Commerce and Business Administration and the Law School. I also have funded a chair at the University of Alabama Medical School.

  • What previous experiences, prior to your work at Balch, influence your practice?

Two distinct experiences come to mind. First, I served as a member of the Board of Bar Examiners for the Alabama State Bar and was a frequent lecturer on banking and corporate law. Throughout my career, I have served as the chair, or as a member of, numerous law revision committees.

Secondly, my practice has been influenced by my time as a banker. When I was with Compass Bancshares, I was involved in the formulation of legislative policy for the banking industry through the Government Relations Council of the American Bankers Association, as president of the Alabama Bankers Association and as a director of the Association of Bank Holding Companies, the Financial Services Roundtable and its predecessor, the Reserve City Bankers Association.
