Douglas B. Kauffman

Most of my community involvement is through my church. I am involved in my church’s prison ministry and I also frequently go on mission trips to Central and South America. We build schools and other community structures, or we work with children. Often I take my children on these trips with me so they can experience different cultures and discover how gratifying it can be to help others.

I started working in sixth grade with a paper route. For six years, I threw papers every day of the year, early on Sunday mornings, and on holidays. That job taught me how to deal with people and provide a timely service. Back then, people wanted their paper on time. It instilled a strong work ethic in me. I learned what it meant to have responsibility. As funny as that may sound, I still apply the principles I learned back then.

I appreciate the human element of employment law. I’m not just dealing with a transaction or a document. I’m dealing with people. People are unpredictable. They have emotions. It’s rewarding to help clients solve a difficult issue or gain an understanding what their options and obligations are so that they can make a good business decision.

I litigate in both federal and state courts in Alabama. I most often handle charges and audits  before the EEOC, the OFCCP, the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor, and the Immigration Customs Enforcement.
