NERC Submits Interpretation of Reliability Standard CIP-002-5.1a

On November 28, 2016, NERC submitted a petition for approval of a proposed interpretation of Reliability Standard CIP-002-5.1 (Cyber Security-BES Cyber Security Categorization). The proposed interpretation provides clarification regarding the meaning of the phrase “shared BES Cyber Systems” in Criterion 2.1 of Attachment to Reliability Standard CIP-002-5.1. The proposed interpretation provides that: (1) “shared BES Cyber Systems” refers to discrete BES Cyber Systems shared by multiple generation units, and (2) the evaluation as to whether a BES Cyber System is shared should be performed individually for each discrete BES Cyber System.  The proposed interpretation was adopted by the NERC Board of Trustees on November 2, 2016.
