FERC Issues Notice of Inquiry Regarding Virtualization and Cloud Computing Services

On February 20, 2020, in Docket No. RM20-8-000, FERC issued a Notice of Inquiry seeking comments regarding the potential benefits and risks associated with the use of virtualization and cloud computing services in association with bulk electric system operations, as well as whether barriers exist in the Commission-approved Critical Infrastructure Protection Reliability Standards that impede the voluntary adoption of virtualization or cloud computing services. FERC intends to use the information obtained from this notice to determine whether it would be appropriate to direct NERC to develop modifications to the CIP Reliability Standards to facilitate the voluntary adoption of virtualization and cloud computing services.
