Russell Dumas Presented at National Business Institute’s Live Online Seminar, “Mississippi Employment Law: Hiring, Firing, and Disciplining Employees”

Russell Dumas, attorney in the firm’s Jackson office and member of the Labor & Employment Practice, presented on two topics at the live online seminar, “Mississippi Employment Law: Hiring, Firing, and Disciplining Employees,” hosted by the National Business Institute (NBI) on May 31, 2023.

Russell’s first presentation, "Hiring New Employees: Complying With Federal and State Laws” covered a wide range of hiring related topics. He began by outlining the guidelines for using social media to screen applicants, emphasizing the importance of compliance with legal requirements. Russell then went on to discuss avoiding common perils in interviews and the importance of training supervisors and managers on hiring practices. His presentation also covered offer letters and other essential at-hire documents, current developments on non-compete agreements, and understanding state working age requirements.

Russell’s second presentation focused on "The Interactions Between the FMLA, ADA, and State Leave and Workers' Compensation Laws." 

This segment covered topics including handling intermittent leave, the do's and don'ts of defensive documentation, and insights into avoiding retaliation claims, offering a comprehensive review of recent case law.
