About Michael
  • What previous experiences, prior to your work at Balch, influence your practice?

Prior to joining Balch, I was given the opportunity to serve as legislative counsel for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. In that capacity, I worked closely with both industry players and legislators on a wide spectrum of intellectual property issues affecting areas such as the pharmaceutical and technology industries, the music and entertainment industry, and the day-to-day operations of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

I also gained an appreciation for and insights into the inner workings of the judicial branch, and I have been able to regularly apply those insights and experiences in my work with Balch.

  • What type of matters do you work on most often?

I have been pleased to work on a number of intellectual property cases since joining the firm, including several cases involving trade secret misappropriation, and advising clients on the effects of pending patent litigation. This is an area of practice that has built on the foundations laid during my time with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

I have also been involved in litigating numerous appeals before the Alabama Supreme Court and the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, and have gained experience with the special rigors that come with appellate litigation. Finally, I have been pleased to work with technology companies and several banking and mortgage servicing clients in various financial litigation matters.
