Much of my work is in the area of employment, and is split about 50:50 between private employers and governmental employers, who of course have to think about due process and other federal constitutional protections that do not directly affect private employers.

Part of what makes being a litigator so much fun is what you learn while working on a case – from the life cycle of mussels to the details of retirement plans to the finer points of manufacturing t-shirts and underwear to relations between county and municipal governments – the variety is endless. Learning how clients see the world and using that knowledge to protect their interests is enormously satisfying.

I have served on local charitable and professional boards: Landmarks, Inns of Court, the Montgomery Academy, the Federal Bar Association, and my parish council, for example. I am the founding chair of the board of the Cloverdale Playhouse, and still serve in that capacity, along with being counsel to the Montgomery Academy and providing pro bono work for Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama.

I was an intelligence officer before I became a lawyer. Like law, intelligence work requires the ability to learn fast, think effectively short- and long-term, be accurate, be discrete, and perhaps above all, exercise good judgment, so it was good preparation for practicing law.
