Grant Eskelsen, partner in the firm’s Nuclear Energy Practice, interviewed with Law360 about his decision to join Balch & Bingham’s Washington, D.C. office, and how he plans to use his decade of experience in the nuclear industry to serve the firm’s clients.
In the article published July 12, 2024, Grant said he wanted to move his practice to Balch & Bingham because of the firm's work on the transactional side, especially within the nuclear sector.
"Balch, I think, is uniquely positioned. They've got the experience, and they're well positioned to do the transactional and the regulatory support for the transaction work that this country's going to need as we do more and more of this nuclear work," Law360 quoted Grant as saying.
Grant’s practice involves advising electric utility companies, particularly owners and operators of nuclear power plants on commercial and regulatory issues. He regularly counsels clients through the complexities of the purchase and sale of a nuclear assets and in aspects of nuclear-related procurement. A key focus of his practice concentrates on issues before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the U.S. Department of Energy, and agreement state regulators. Grant has deep experience advising on nuclear export and import regulations, including 10 CFR Part 810 and 10 CFR Part 110. He also advises clients on recovering damages in litigation and settlement for the U.S. Department of Energy for failure to remove spent nuclear fuel from reactor sites.
In his interview, Grant emphasized how much he enjoys transactional work in the nuclear arena, and appreciates the opportunity to support companies that make America’s energy.
“At the end of the day, it's about the people that are working at the companies in the plants, and who are sitting there and putting that power in the grid, so that when I flip that switch and want to have that switch on, it's ready there," Law360 quoted Grant as saying. "That's what keeps me going.”
Stan Blanton, Balch & Bingham Managing Partner and Chair of the firm’s Nuclear Energy Practice, welcomed Grant as a great addition to the team.
"I have witnessed Grant's talent, diligence, and responsiveness supporting the nuclear industry in both regulatory and transactional approvals," Stan was quoted as saying. "We are happy to welcome him to our team and look forward to the value his experience will bring our clients."
Grant joins the firm shortly after Jeff Sharkey, who arrived in May as Senior Regulatory Advisor.
