Balch Attorneys Discuss Cover Letter Preparation with Black Law Students Association at The University of Alabama School of Law

Balch & Bingham attorneys presented a workshop on cover letter preparation for the Black Law Students Association at The University of Alabama School of Law, an organization designed to support and promote diversity within the law school and the legal profession. The skills-focused event aimed to provide students with valuable insights into crafting effective cover letters for their summer associate program applications.

Irving Jones, partner in the firm’s Birmingham office and member of the Litigation Practice, and Ian Burt, attorney in the firm’s Birmingham office and member of the Real Estate Practice, presented at the workshop on Nov. 13.

During the workshop, Irving and Ian emphasized the essential elements of persuasive cover letters and provided guidance on what law firms typically seek when reviewing the numerous applications they receive.

Irving focuses on internal investigations for regulated industries and litigating products liability, casualty, and medical malpractice matters. He represents corporate and utility clients across the southeast in both federal and state courts. Before practicing law, Irving was a counterintelligence agent for the National Security Agency where he conducted polygraph examinations and investigations.

Ian focuses his practice on all aspects of real estate transactions including acquisition, financing and development. He also advises clients throughout the lifecycle of a real estate project, including review and analysis of due diligence materials. His previous experience in the public sector gives him a unique perspective that allows him to better serve clients.
