About Drew
Drew excels in his ability to analyze and untangle complex tax issues, and then develop practical solutions to help each client maximize tax savings.
Q&A
  • What types of clients do you represent?
I represent a wide range of clients, from the smallest closely-held corporations to some of the largest publicly-traded corporations in the following industries: oil and gas (including producers, midstream pipelines, and refiners), electric utilities (including generation, transmission, and distribution), manufacturing, retail, financial services, insurance, telecom, and data processing.
  • What do you find most exciting about your work?
I get excited when I can analyze tax statutes and regulations to untangle complex tax issues or develop novel approaches to help defend a client from an audit assessment. Yet I've often felt more valuable and fulfilled when dealing with mundane tax issues, especially after I've successfully battled a state taxing agency for a client that was unfairly assessed tax by an overzealous auditor.
  • What legal challenges are you looking forward to tackling in the future?

Select Matters

  • Public utility company: Represented client under a sales and use tax, and helped reduce the tax assessment by more than $50 million in tax, penalty, and interest.
  • Food and beverage manufacturer: Represented a food and beverage manufacturer to pursue a sales and use tax refund. Developed a novel approach to the manufacturing exemption that helped secure a refund of $3 million that will likely have prospective benefit.
  • Credit finance companies: Represented multiple credit finance companies with a novel tax refund claim that required complex, detailed analysis of sampled transactions. Helped secure $10 million in savings for clients.
  • Steel fabrication and installation contractor: Represented a contractor that fabricates and installs steel structures after the contractor was assessed $8.5 million in sales and use tax and interest. Reduced the assessment to under $100,000.
  • Oil and gas production company: Represented oil and gas producer with a claim involving research and development credits for sales tax and franchise tax. Analyzed and presented the R&D accounting data in a structured manner that helped pave the way to securing a tax refund for the client exceeding $40 million.
  • Midstream pipeline: Represented a midstream pipeline operator in restructuring its operations and transactions to help it achieve tax savings of approximately $5 million per year.
  • Manufacturer of cash register tape: Helped client win an issue in appeals that resulted in savings for client of approximately $50,000 per year. The appellate court opinion provides an expansion of the manufacturing exemption for Texas sales and use tax.
  • Retailer of building supplies: Represented national retailer that had been assessed sales tax relating to resale certificates that the tax agency claimed were not accepted in good faith. Helped to present arguments that convinced the State to drop its claim in court.
